IonActive Power Treatment

The IonActive Power Treatment, a brand new, expert-level professional treatment, combines thermal activity and the latest treatment-room technology to optimize product penetration for dramatically-improved skin. This is a professional treatment with active ingredients. It consists of Exothermoid (heating) and Endothermoid (cooling) Gelloids and 4 different Ion Actives.

What does it consist of?

Each IonActive is designed with a particular skin condition in mind. When combined the IonActives form an occlusive barrier to the skin, maximizing the penetration of the IonActives into layers of the skin.

The Gelloids:

It's a very peculiar name, I know, but once you feel the gelloid on your skin you will understand why they created this name for it.In chemistry there are two types of reactions: Endothermic and Exothermic. In exothermic reactions you are dissipating heat, or heat is given off in the reaction and you feel warmth. In an endothermic reaction you are taking heat from the surrounding areas, creating a cooling sensation. Exothermic gelloid reaction doesn't happen immediately, it will give off a little bit of heat in the beginning and then when the skin is touched, it re-releases the heat. The reason it does this is because it's made up of something called Zeolites. Zeolites come from volcanos. During a volcanic eruption, when lava meets the ocean, it cools immediately and forms a negatively charged particle. That negatively charged particle has little holes in it and when water is in proximity of this zeolite, the reaction produces heat, an exothermic reaction. When the Exothermic Gelloid, which is a waterless formula, is combined with the water that is in the IonActives, the reaction produces heat and creates a wonderful warming and energizing effect on the skin, exceptionally great for aging skin. The Endothermal Gelloid is a combination of aloe leaf juice, along with spirulina (which is a blue green algae chalk full of protein), hyaluronic acid, white tea (for its polyphenols or antioxidants), ferulic acid (found naturally in the seeds of apples, oranges, and some vegetables, nuts and grains that is a powerful antioxidant/polyphenol), curcuminoids, niacinimide, eucalyptus oil and lavender oil. The Eucalyptus oil and aloe are responsible for the cooling feel on the skin. This is great for acneic and sensitive skin types.Dermalogica uses encapsulation in many of their product formulas. Encapsulation delivers the benefits of active ingredients into deeper layers of the skin without degrading the ingredients. The following four active concentrates have all been placed in a liposomal encapsulation delivery system:

1. Retinol IonActive

Includes a 1% retinolRetinol speeds up cell renewal (exfoliation in the skin), reduces fine lines and wrinkles, increases skin firmness, and improves skin discoloration. Along with retinol, Dermalogica also includes Chlorella in the formulation. Chlorella is a green algae and is a rich source of peptides and amino acids. Dermalogica has extracted the peptides and amino acids from the chlorella and placed it into the liposome to make sure it is delivered into the skin. Chlorella has been shown in numerous studies to stimulate Collagen I and Collagen III generation, which are the two most prevalent types of collagen in our skin. Chlorella also enhances the glycoproteins in the Dermal-Epidermal Junction and decreases MMPS (MMPS destroys collagen) as well as increases skin firmness.

2. Oligopeptide IonActive

Oligopeptide IonActive is for treating hyperpigmentation, which is uneven color or dark spots that start to appear with age, and helps with the overall brightening of the skin. The Oligopeptide IonActive has 6% oligopeptides, MAP(vitamin C) and Digalactosyl Gallic Acid. The idea behind this product is to treat hyperpigmentation in a way that no one in the industry has ever approached before. It's foundation is based on the fact that our bodies house around 1 trillion bacteria. Most of the bacteria cohabitate without issue and can do good things for us. For instance, propionibacterium is a bacteria that can cause acne but it also prevents streptococcus from growing on our skin by producing fatty acids. We have over a thousand different species of bacteria growing on our bodies at any given time. The Digalactosyl gallic acid, when applied to the skin, affects melanogenesis at seven different sites within the skin. This uses our skin's own microflora to treat and control hyperpigmentation which is a completely unique approach within the industry in regards to the treatment of hyperpigmentation.

3. Niacinimide IonActive

Niacinimide IonActive includes 4% Niacinimide, 3% Potasium Azeloyl Diglycinate (azaleic acid derivative), colloidal silver and Japanese knotweed extract, and tea tree. Tea tree is an anti-microbial. Japanese Knotweed has a wonderful polyphenol in it that is an anti-acne agent. Not only does it control bacteria, but it also controls the amount of sebum (oil) that your skin produces.Colloidal silver is commonly used in homeopathic medicine and has been used by many cultures throughout history for its antibacterial properties.Dermalogica has put Niacinimide in the Niacinimide IonActive at a 4% because studies have shown that it decreases sebum excretion and decreases pustules (white pus that forms the white head on inflamed breakouts). Clinical studies have shown that 4% Niacinimide is equivalent to 1% clindamycin, an antibiotic for which you would need a prescription.Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate is an Azaleic Acid derivative. Dermalogica uses this because it is stable. Azaleic Acid on it's own is not stable and can also act as a drug. Numerous studies have shown that it is bacteriostatic, meaning it kills bacteria, and anti-keratinizing meaning it gets rid of the impaction plug (blackheads) by keeping skin cells from overproducing and clogging the pores. Azaleic Acid also acts as an anti-inflammatory and skin lightening agent which helps to eliminate red spots that are left after a breakout is gone or, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

4. Hyaluronic Acid Acive

Hyaluronic Acid helps to hydrate the skin's tissue. Sorghum bran is another ingredient that Dermalogica has included which generally reduces inflammation in the skin. Clinical studies have shown that reduced heat and stinging or irritation in the skin with Sorghum bran. Hyaluronic Acid Acive is great for dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin types. This is a highly active, energized treatment that takes 45 minutes. It is a hybrid of the power of touch and electrical modalities such as galvanic, ultrasound, or microcurrent in order to achieve highly active results. The IonActive Power Treatment includes a massage so as to incorporate the power of touch. The massage movements are modeled from a Japanese-style facial massage in order to help target particular skin conditions and to increase the bioelectricity of the skin.
